A Little Bit of Culture

My New Year's resolution for 2006 is to add a little bit of culture to my life. The purpose of this blog is to document my cultural experiences and discoveries.

The Vanishing Corner Barber Shop

In its heyday, the Corner barbershop was a major gathering place where men discussed politics, sports, received the latest local gossip and yes also got their hair cut. They are slowly disappearing from our American landscape; having been replaced by salons and trendy spas located in suburban strip malls. William Marvey, the owner of the only remaining manufacturer of the red and white striped barber poles, states that a few years ago there were over 100,000 barber shops in this country but now there are only about 85,000. In the above photo, a friend's four year old is getting his haircut at a barber shop in Green Bay. Let’s celebrate shops like this while we still can.

The gentleman cutting the young man's hair in the photo has operated his single-chair shop for 37 years at the same location and was cutting hair elsewhere before that. It is indeed the kind of place that you can get your hair cut and/or get caught up on the news of the day. I happen to know that for some these are distinctly different reasons for making a trip to this gentleman's shop.

The gentleman has a couple of old photos hanging on the wall of his shop that were taken 40 yrs ago of himself cutting the hair of a young boy. I had always admired them on trips there with my sons. My goal with this series of candid shots (including the one shown above) was to make it look like one of those 40-yr old photos on the wall in this gentleman's shop. I did present him with a framed print which now humbly hangs next to the old ones. Canon 20D EFS 18-55mm lens. Dec 2005
